Anthony John (Tony) Leggieri, 91, of Ijamsville, MD, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Frederick Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

He leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Mary Ann (Toth) Leggieri.

Born in Hudson, NY, on March 24, 1925, he was a son of Theresa Mary Zangardi and Raffaele Leggieri; and after the loss of his father was blessed with a step-father Julius Zacharias. He grew up in Tunkhannock, PA, and joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 where he served in the Navy Armed Guard during World War II. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during one of many tours.

He met his future wife at a hometown dance and they were married six weeks later on October 18, 1947.  He attended Penn State University.  He spent his career working for the Department of the Navy and retired after 29 ½ years.  He then tried his hand at various part time jobs, finally settling in at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Damascus, MD, where he worked for many years.  As an active member of St. Paul’s, he held many volunteer positions, including Usher and Eucharistic Minister.  He belonged to the Knights of Columbus.  In 2003, he was presented the Archdiocese Service Award at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for his many years of service to the church.

Tony loved spending time with his family, telling stories and sharing memories.  He enjoyed playing golf and football, tinkering around the house, and restoring old cars.  Tony enjoyed coaching his sons’ sports teams, starting several youth sporting programs, and was a mentor to many youth through sports and his church. He treated everyone he met as if they were family.

He will be laid to rest next to his beloved son, Anthony John Leggieri, Jr.  He was also predeceased by two brothers, Matt Leggieri and Eddie Zacharias. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons James and his wife Suzanne; Lawrence and his wife Susan; Thomas and his wife Kathryn; Robert and his wife Kimberly, Gary; and his daughter Nancy; as well as his “extra son” Richard Warboy.  He was Pop Pop to 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Shirley Zacharias, a large extended family and many close friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Molesworth-Williams P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 9240 Damascus Road, Damascus, MD.  Interment will follow at St. Paul's United Methodist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony’s name to any of his favorite charities, including St. Paul's Catholic Church (mission trip fund), St. Jude Hospital, Frederick Rescue Mission or The American Cancer Society.
