Thomas (Tom/Tommy) Richard King
Died March 15, 2026 at home in Etchison.
Born August 24, 1940 in Washington, DC. He lived with foster parents, Elsie and Lewis Mathias of Gaithersburg until he was adopted by Pearle and Fillmore King of Etchison. In 1964 he married Jane Mathias (the daughter of Elsie and Lewis Mathias). He and Jane lived their entire married life in Etchison – first on Laytonsville Road and then on Hipsley Mill Road.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane; daughter, Angela and her wife, Dianne; son, Tim and his wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Jason Sandoval, Angelica Jimenez and her fiancé, Dustin, Stephanie Vance, Matthew Vance, John Vance; great grandchildren, Delaney, James and Jacob Vance, nephew, Jerry Mathias and family, nieces, Kristin Tulip and family and Jaci Gosche.
The day after graduation from Damascus High School in 1958, Tom went to work at the Atomic Energy Commission in Germantown, spending his entire career there. The agency later became the Department of Energy. He retired in 1994 with 36 years of service.
Tom loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, hiking, riding his motorcycle, and riding his bicycle (he biked several “centuries” and biked the C&O Canal). He also enjoyed cutting wood, gardening and lawn work. Tom loved America’s national parks, so for his 70th birthday, the family took him to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.
Tom was a life-long member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Etchison. He served as treasurer, financial secretary and trustee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, PO Box 191, Damascus, MD 20872.
The family extends their appreciation for exceptional caregivers, Stanford, Robert and Kim.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, April 4, 2026, 11:00 am, at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 24115 Laytonsville Road, Etchison.
