Obituary for Stanley Liu

Stanley Liu, 89, of Damascus, Maryland, passed away on August 10, 2024. Born in 1935, Stanley was one of five siblings. His childhood was marked by adventurous escapades with his older brother, Clement, in China and Taiwan. Encouraged by a high school teacher in Taiwan, Stanley excelled in his studies, eventually earning his undergraduate degree from National Cheng Kung University. Stanley continued his education at Oklahoma State University, where he completed an MS in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from New York University. He spent his career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, retiring in 2003. 

In New York, Stanley met Irene, a fellow graduate student, and they married in 1975, celebrating 49 years of marriage. Stanley was known for his kindness, wry humor, love of reading and solving puzzles, and his ability to regale others with amusing stories from his life. He delighted in celebrating his grandchildren and was renowned for his Taiwanese beef noodle soup. 

Stanley is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Karen and James; and grandchildren, Lily and Colin, all of whom will miss him dearly.

A celebration of his life may be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to the National Park Foundation, reflecting Stanley’s love for nature and his enjoyment of National Park family vacations, or to Children's National Hospital Foundation, in gratitude for the care James received during a childhood illness.
