Regina Westbrooks Obituary

Regina P. Westbrooks

December 16, 1937 – January 10, 2024

Regina P. Westbrooks, of Damascus, Maryland, passed away peacefully at Brooke Grove Nursing Center, at the age of 86.

Jean was the youngest daughter of Catherine and Francis Manley of Scranton, PA. Her father passed away when she was young and she was raised by her mom and grandmother, Bridget, before her mother married J.P. Collins. She loved them all dearly.

Jean was a proud graduate of St. Paul’s High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. While in nursing school she met a young Army sergeant, Alton Westbrooks, who was stationed at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. Jean and Al, or Weis as she called him, were instantly inseparable and married on July 5, 1958, in Scranton’s St. Paul’s Church.

The former Dickson Avenue resident and her husband were soon on a plane to Asmara, in present day Eritrea. This was the first of many moves over a 20-year military career. These moves took the couple to Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and three US states. During this journey they lovingly raised four children.

After retiring from the Army in 1975, Jean and Al planted roots in the Gaithersburg area and proceeded to build several successful small businesses together—side by side. Jean was the family bookkeeper. She kept meticulous records in her flawless catholic school penmanship in her ever-present ledger books.

After retiring, Jean and Al loved traveling and spending time with their family. They briefly lived in Charlottesville, VA, and then Brundidge, AL, before moving to Damascus to be closer to family. Jean treasured her four children, ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren, who called her Grandma Jean. She had a soft spot in her heart for so many people and a knack for making you feel special. After her mobility was reduced in recent years, she relished watching live streams on her iPad of her great-grandchildren’s sports games and dance competitions. She was a voracious reader and the family genealogist and historian.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Alton, and son, Christopher. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Westbrooks of Poolesville, MD, and Bob Westbrooks of Damascus, MD, and her daughter, Cathy Doss of Richmond, VA. She will be dearly missed, and her smile and laugh will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Family will receive friends at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 9250E Damascus Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872 on Friday, January 26 from 10 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.  Interment will follow in All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, Maryland.
