OBITUARY – PASTOR PATRICK WILLIAM POWERS

Pastor Patrick William Powers (73) of Ijamsville, MD, went home to be with Jesus on May 14, 2024. Born in Bethesda, MD, he was the son of Walter and Mary Powers and brother to Robert and Raymond, who predeceased him. He graduated from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, and then served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 6 years from 1971 to 1977.

He is survived by his wife Ginger (Souder) Powers. They met in 1972 and married in 1978. He leaves nieces Janis Powers, Dana Lawson, and Cameron Davisson and their families. We also remember special family and friends Chuck and Ellen Holbrook, Scott and DJ Matthews, Roger and Leslie (Hwang) Shue, Jeff and Mary Ellen Roberson, and godchildren Alissa, Tim, Emma, Nick, Megan, Esther and Charissa.

Patrick worked side by side for 48 years with Bill Thom (Susan) at Dovetail Printing, Signs and Woodworking, Damascus, MD. Their craftsmanship still graces businesses, churches, communities, and homes in the metro area.

For the last 23 years, Patrick and his wife have been the U.S. directors of the Central American Relief Project of El Shaddai Congregation, Frederick, MD, a school sponsorship program in El Salvador, coordinating with Pastors Francis and Zulma Batarsé, Cristo Centro Church, San Salvador, El Salvador.

In the 1980s Pat and his wife, along with area churches and sponsors, helped with the resettlement in Frederick of many refugees from Laos, teaching them English and how to navigate the culture of their new country. He will be remembered by Mouay, Tina, Vieng, Kia, Bobbi, Johnny and Sarah. Pat was a Papa to many children.

Patrick served the El Shaddai Congregation community as a deacon (Pastors Todd Westphal and Andrew Gudgeon). He would say, “We are at our best when we are in community.” He was always available to help out and dedicated himself to projects without hesitation. He was blessed by the community at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, Frederick (Pastor Luke Robinson), as well as Ijamsville UMC, where he will be buried.

Thanks go to the able team of Hospice of Frederick County for their care. We also thank Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus, MD, for coordinating arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Central American Relief Project (CARP), c/o El Shaddai Congregation, 206 East Fourth Street, Frederick, MD 21701. A celebration of life service for Patrick will take place at El Shaddai Congregation, June 9, 2024, at 4 p.m.
