Nancy M. Norton (known as Nan to everyone) of Damascus, Maryland died September 26, 2024.  She was born in Elkins, West Virginia, February 27, 1937, to Edna Virginia and Henry Gassoway Huffman.  She was 87 years old.

Ms. Norton attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia where she met her future husband George Norton.  They were married October 13, 1956.  George passed away October 11, 1991, two days before their 35th wedding anniversary.

Before moving to Maryland in 1969, Nan and George lived in northern New Jersey.  She was an active volunteer all her life and received Macy’s Woman of the Year Award for her volunteer work.

She was a secretary, membership chair, head of adult events and co-editor of the newsletter for the Friends of the Library, Damascus Chapter, and a member of the library advisory committee for twenty years.  She also did other volunteer work for the library including several months reorganizing the Damascus History Files.  In 1996 she founded the Friends Book Club where she was the leader since its founding for over 21 years.  Nan was a charter member of the Damascus Heritage Society, and their corresponding secretary.

Nan was an artist, avid gardener and loved and supported the arts.  She was a member of the Kennedy Center Circles, The Roger Steven Society, The Olney Theatre, Weinberg Center and Fords Theatre.

She leaves her dearest friends, Diane Reader and her adopted family of 53 years, the Moxley family and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no services.  Memorial Gifts may be made to the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington. D.C.
