Gloria A. Moxley Warfield Obituary

Gloria Alvin Moxley Warfield was born in Frederick, Md on December 20, 1930.  She passed away from this life on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the age of 93.  She was the daughter of the late Raymond Merson Moxley and Effie Madeline Day Moxley. Gloria married Merhle Basil Warfield, Jr. on September 2, 1949, at the old Montgomery Methodist Church in Claggetsville.


Born on a farm in Kemptown, MD, she spent her childhood working in the fields planting wormweed and tending the family garden. Her father had a Wormweed Still on the farm and extracted wormweed oil to sell. This was a family affair in which all participated.


Gloria is survived by her two sons, Merhle Wayne Warfield and wife, Sharon, and Raymond Curtis Warfield, Sr. and wife, Nancy. She is also survived by a sister, Donna Jean Moxley Isaacs and husband, Arthur, (Skip). She was predeceased by a sister Catherine (Kate) Warfield, and a brother Leonard Wayne Moxley. In addition she has four grandchildren, Raymond Curtis Warfield, Jr., Jason Edward Warfield, Brandie Elizabeth Warfield and Kristin Leanne Warfield, and two great-grandchildren Lucas and Delila Warfield.


Gloria graduated from Damascus High School in 1947 and began her first job at the Bank of Bethesda, in Maryland.  She soon became a full-time farmer’s wife and mother. Gloria and her husband, Merhle worked and managed the Warfield’s Babble Brook Farm for his entire life; Merhle farming and milking cows and Gloria gardening and baking (a cake every day). She enjoyed her church and auxiliary and was famous for her stewed tomatoes and homemade rolls. Later in life she worked at Tom and Ray’s Restaurant and for Eaton Insurance Company.


Gloria and her family were all members of Montgomery United Methodist and where Gloria enjoyed being a member of the Heritage Circle. The family also attended Mt. Tabor United Methodist in Etchison for many years while their children were young.


Merhle and Gloria traveled to over 48 states in the United States with the Damascus Travel Club and the National Young Farmer’s Club.  She was a life member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for over 77 years and where she held numerous offices.


There will be a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus, MD 20872. Burial will be at Montgomery United Methodist Church Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department or Montgomery United Methodist Church.
