Faye Kessell Mathias, age 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 19 2022, at Ravenwood/Creekside Assisted Living, in Hagerstown, MD. Faye was born to the late Paul and Viola Kessell, one of eight children, on March 20, 1938. She grew up in Montgomery County, and graduated from Gaithersburg High School. On August 21, 1959, she married Wilmer Mathias at Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg, MD.
She was employed by Montgomery County Public Schools her entire career, mostly as a Special Education Instructional Assistant. She absolutely loved children, and God truly chose the perfect job for her.
She was very active at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, serving as a Sunday school teacher and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. She later attended and was a member of Longmeadow Church of the Brethren after moving to Hagerstown in 2016.
She was often a caregiver or companion to many family members in their time of need, and was a shining example of a Christian to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by Wilmer, her husband of just 2 weeks shy of 55 years; her brothers: Gerald, Earl, Gary, Jim, and Jack Kessell; her sister, Wanda Roswell; her brothers-in-law: William Roswell, Eugene Harner, and Stanley Mathias; her sisters-in-law: Helen Kessell and Rebecca Mathias.
She is survived by her two children: Jerry (Christine) Mathias of Thornloe, Ontario; and Jacqueline (Steve) Gosche of Hagerstown, MD; her sister Jeannie Harner-Roswell; her sisters-in-law: Dottie, Ella Mae, and Becky Kessell, Pam Plitt, Jane (Tom) King; and adopted sister-in-law Anna Mae Poole; Grandchildren: Nathalie (Steven), Trevor (Josee), and Blair; Great grandchildren: Jacob, Levi, and Georgia; and a multitude of truly beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and Kessell and Sherman cousins, and many friends.
Friends may visit the family 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, November 29th at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 30 at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, 4121A Green Valley Road, Monrovia, Maryland. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, or Longmeadow Church of the Brethren, or Washington County Hospice.
The family would like to especially thank everyone at Ravenwood/Creekside Assisted Living for all the care and friendship they provided Faye, which meant even more during the isolating time of COVID, and would like to thank Washington County Hospice.
