Basil Boyer Day, Sr., 86, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022. Born July 13, 1936 on the family farm to Kelsel, Sr. and Mildred Day (Burdette), he both entered and left this world surrounded by those he loved.

A 1954 graduate of Frederick High School, his musical accolades landed him a scholarship to American University where he met his wife of 65 years, Sally Jo Day (Eisenbeis.) Shortly after marrying, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. Upon discharge in 1962, he became a parole and probation agent for the State of Maryland and retired in 1992 as Assistant Commissioner of Corrections.

Basil's lifelong music avocation included 28 years with the Browningsville Cornet Band (16 years as director,) 60 years directing church choirs and several years directing barbershop choruses.

Apart from music, his favorite past times were traveling with his wife, spending time with his grandchildren, and working jigsaw puzzles and Sudoku.

Basil leaves behind his wife, Sally Jo; brother John Day (Mandy); daughter Polly (Joe); grandchildren Jennifer Helderman (Trevor), Andrew Mihalkovic, Ethan Day, Christopher Mihalkovic, and Evan Day; great-grandson Levi Helderman; brother-in law Howard Eisenbeis; sisters-in-law Shirley Day and Margie Eisenbeis; and daughter-in-law Cindy Day. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kelsel, Sr. and Mildred Day; siblings, Kelsel Day, Jr., Jane Day, Maxwell Day, and Janet Day Fisher; son, Basil Day Jr.; sisters-in-law, Betty Day and Barbara Eisenbeis; and brothers-in-law, Britt Fisher and Fred Eisenbeis.

Family and friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872. A viewing will also be available on Friday, Dec 16, from 10 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m., at Providence United Methodist Church, 3716 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, Maryland 21770.
