Barbara H. Dangler Obituary

Barbara Jane Hurt Dangler, age 91 of Gaithersburg, Maryland passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, Maryland.

Barbara was born on February 2, 1933, to Earl and Pauline Hurt in rural Todd County, Kentucky. Barbara’s mother, Pauline, died one year later of pulmonary tuberculosis. Barbara was raised by her grandmother. During her formative years, the events of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and WWII gave her a deep and enduring sense of what it means to help friends and neighbors.

In 1951, she graduated Salutatorian from Clifty High School in Clifty, Kentucky. Barbara attended Murray State College in Murray, Kentucky where she graduated as a registered nurse. Her nursing career spanned over 40 years and included positions in both hospitals and private practices.

She made a difference in the lives of many people through her work with Hope Alive, a support system for women transforming their lives. She worked tirelessly at the Frederick Soup Kitchen from shopping for ingredients to scrubbing pots and pans. At the Hyattstown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Hyattstown, Maryland, Barbara served as Treasurer and Trustee. She and her sidekick, Martha Cooley, took on challenging projects like painting the entire parsonage and capturing a black snake in the church basement.

In her later years, Barbara learned how to enjoy leisure time. She immersed herself in mystery novels and complicated jigsaw puzzles. She cultivated glorious flower gardens and quilts too! During her final months, Barbara enjoyed listening to the birds.

Barbara is survived by her son, Max (Linda Bahk) Dangler of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and three daughters, Anne (John) Estes of Anchorage, Alaska; Elizabeth (David) Strong of Scotch Plains, New Jersey; Marti Wolfe of Thomaston, Maine; six grandchildren, Emma Strong, Jennifer Estes (Jeremy Allen), Keenan Estes, Max Dangler, Jr., Sarah (Matthew) Amling, and Sheila (Christiano) Lima-Strong; four Greatgrandchildren, Isla, Nolan, Olive and Penelope; four nieces, Aimee Dangler, Christina Dangler, Janet Farley, and Mary Anna Pavlos.

Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Dangler; son-in-law Earl Wolfe; in-laws, Bill and Eleanor Rice, Curt and Claire Dangler; and friends Margaret Coleman, Martha Cooley, Marian Meyers and Katherine Rogers.

A memorial service for friends, family, and congregants will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Hyattstown Christian Church, 26012 Frederick Road, Clarksburg (Hyattstown), Maryland 20871, at 1:00 PM.
