John Monard Obituary

John “Mike” Michael Monard (Corporal U.S. Army) age 88, of Mount Airy, MD, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2018, in Westminster, MD.

Mike was born, May 29, 1930, in Travilah, MD, the sixth of seven children to the late Lewis Monard and the late Nettie Mae Norwood Monard. Mike was raised on a dairy farm, where he learned the value of hard work at an early age. Mike developed an early love for the game of baseball, playing through childhood and continuing into adulthood, playing for several local Montgomery County teams during the Golden Years of the game.

Mike enlisted in the US Army in 1948, serving as a Military Policeman providing law enforcement, base security and prisoner transport. In 1950 Mike shipped out for the Korean peninsula, serving with the 57th MP Company during the Korean War. Though humble about his service, Mike was very proud of his time in the Army. Mike was actively involved in the veteran community and was a lifetime member of the VFW- Post #10076, American Legion- “Gold” Post #191 and AMVETS- Post #2.

Upon his return from military service, Mike found a new interest in and began dating his childhood friend Marilyn Windsor. The two married in 1951 and began their life together. Married for sixty-six years, they raised three children and enjoyed being actively involved in the lives of their eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mike held several jobs in the local area before being hired by the Montgomery County- Department of Transportation. Working as a surveyor for the county, Mike was involved in many infrastructure and roadway improvements still in use today. After his retirement from the county, Mike co-founded a successful construction company.

In recent years, Mike could be found spending time with his family, playing golf or watching baseball or football.  He was a loyal Maryland Terrapins, Washington Senators/Nationals, and Washington Redskins fan.
