Allyn H. Myers, Jr.

Allyn Henry Myers, Jr. died on Friday morning, June 22, 2018 at his home in Gaithersburg, MD.  He was 84 years old.

Born in Thurmont, MD, Allyn and his family moved to Gaithersburg where he grew up, graduating with the Class of 52 from Gaithersburg High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Maryland and marry his college sweetheart, Sara Elizabeth “Bette” Welsh.

The summer after graduation, Allyn worked and managed the farm of his father-in-law in Damascus, MD when Bette’s dad and brother contracted Scarlet Fever. Afterward he enlisted in the army and served for 3 years, spending one year in Germany where Bette joined him for 6 months. They were able to travel throughout Europe and even visited North Africa, this began their fondness for travel. When Allyn was discharged, he and Bette moved to Damascus and Allyn began a career with Liberty Mutual Insurance that would span 30 years. He managed the claims departments of the McLean, Fairfax and Rockville offices.

Over the years and after retirement, Allyn and Bette enjoyed traveling, which included European tours, cruises and weekend trips visiting friends and cousins, civil war battlefields, historical societies and halls of records from North Carolina to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to research family histories. Together, they volunteered with Damascus Help and Meals on Wheels which Allyn continued for several years after Bette’s death in 2006.

Allyn is survived by his daughters, Laura Myers and Meighan Wilson, his son, Mark Myers and his wife, Patti, and his grandchildren, Madaline Wilson, Elias Wilson, Justin Myers, Jack Myers, and Olivia Myers.

The family will receive friends 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., ( Wednesday August 1, ) at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD 20872.  Inurnment will be private.
